The word 'Rapport' comes from the French 'rapporter,' meaning 'to bring back'. From an evolutionary psychology perspective, it makes sense that we develop this click. It helps us quickly assess whether someone is trustworthy and shares the same values, which used to be crucial for survival.
How does Rapport arise?
Rapport actually arises naturally. For example, you start imitating the other person's body language or gestures. You adapt your speaking pace and tone to theirs. It's about getting on the same wavelength with how the other person processes information, such as their sensory experiences and thinking styles.
Why is Rapport important?
Once you have such a report, it is easier to empathise with the other person. You better understand what they are going through. It's all about harmony, openness, respect for each other's worth, and mutual trust.
