Logical Levels of Learning and Change

Logical Levels of Learning and Change
Business Coach & Trainer Robert Dilts developed the 'Logical Levels of Learning and Change' model, which describes a hierarchy of levels of processes within an individual or group.

We distinguish six levels that are important to understand and use to guide an individual or a group.

  • Environment: This is the base level, where everything happens and can strongly influence the way we behave. Think of a noisy environment where it is difficult to concentrate.
  • Behaviour. Here we are concerned with the actions we take and the patterns and trends we exhibit. Behaviour is strongly influenced by the environment, but also by the other levels.
  • Capabilities. Here we are talking about the knowledge and techniques we use to change our behaviour. Capabilities are not tangible, but manifest in behaviour.
  • Values and Beliefs. Here we are talking about the deeper drives that guide our behaviour. Values and beliefs are the building blocks of our mental model of the world and determine how we stand in the world and interact with ourselves and others.
  • Identity. Here we are concerned with the roles we take on and how we fulfil those roles. This strongly influences our values and beliefs and determines our behaviour and the skills we deploy.
  • Spirituality. Here we are talking about the vision that guides our lives in a certain direction and gives us a sense of meaning and direction.

It is important to understand that all levels are interrelated and influence each other. By working with the logical levels, you can ensure that changes are made at a deeper level and that the changes are lasting.

With the Logical Levels, you have a useful model to ask open-ended questions to gain insight into different processes within an individual or group. Each level has typical verbiage and by listening carefully and asking questions, you can infer at which level certain processes take place.
