Gespreksproces

Conversation Process
Every meeting, training, coaching, interview, intervision, brainstorm, workshop… is a conversation. By understanding the proces of the conversation, you become more effective as a communicator, manager, trainer, consultant, coach, leader or facilitator.

There are five components that are important for the conduct of a meeting, training, coaching or any other kind of conversation.

  1. Opening: as facilitator, you invite the participants, explain the rules, set the boundaries and establish the purpose of the game. In doing so, you create the playing field in which the participants can actively participate.
  2. Divergent phase: the participants explore the possibilities within the playing space. They test the boundaries of the playing field and test out various strategies to achieve their goal. In this, new insights, ideas and points of agreement and difference may emerge.
  3. Emergent phase: in this phase, the different points that emerged during the exploration begin to connect and form a kind of 'red thread'. This is the moment when new possibilities, resources, insights or capabilities can be developed.
  4. Convergent phase: after the exploration and emergence phase, the field is narrowed and decisions are made on which points are important and which direction will be followed. This is the phase where decisions are made and actions are formulated.
  5. Closing: finally, you close the game by formulating the conclusions, recording a decision and/or agreeing on what the next step will be. This is the moment when participants can look back on the game and the results achieved.

Using these five steps as a guide, as a facilitator you have a clear structure to prepare and guide a process so that the desired goal is achieved.
