Wil je informatie beter onthouden? Geef je geheugen een boost!

We have all struggled at times with remembering new information or understanding complex concepts.

Want to remember information better,

But did you know there is a simple way to boost your memory and understand information better?  The answer lies in Allan Paivio's Double Coding Theory (DCT).

What is Double Coding Theory?

The DCT states that we process and remember information by using two different representational systems: verbal and visual/spatial representations. The verbal code covers language and auditory aspects, while the visual/spatial code covers visual and spatial features.

How does it work?

The power of the DCT lies in the use of both codes. By representing information both verbally and visually, we create multiple mental representations that reinforce each other. For example, imagine learning a new language. By looking not only at the written words, but also at pictures, diagrams and other visual aids, you activate both the verbal and visual/spatial codes. This helps you understand and remember the words better, as your brain can make different associations and meanings.

Practical applications:

  1. Studying:

Use visual aids such as diagrams, mind maps and illustrations to clarify complex concepts. Combine them with written explanations to activate the verbal code and create a strong mental representation.

  2. Presenting

When giving a presentation, don't just use words, add visual elements. This can take the form of images, graphics, infographics or even simple hand gestures and movements. By using both codes, you will make your message more engaging and easier for your audience to understand.

  3. Daily communication:

Pay attention to your own communication and use both verbal and visual cues to get your message across. This includes your intonation, facial expressions and body language. By creating congruence between your verbal and visual cues, you ensure clearer communication and reduce the chances of misunderstandings.
