# Facilitation

Let people work together

*Do you sometimes feel exhausted after a meeting? Do meetings seem to last endlessly? Do you sometimes feel you are not really relevant or cannot contribute? Does the real meeting happen in the corridor after the actual meeting?*

Working together also means consulting together, solving problems, developing strategies, making decisions, clarifying company or department visions, doing budget exercises, setting up intervision groups, facilitating management meetings, mapping business processes, working out project plans, implementing change processes...

After this intensive training course, you will be able to design and successfully facilitate such meetings and workshops.

**Learning goals**

After this training course, participants will be able to:

- take meetings and workshops to a higher level
- facilitate all kinds of meetings and processes
- deal with resistance
- let people participate more easily
- guide conversations, meetings and workshops to desired outcomes

This training course is intended for managers, project managers and coaches who want to sharpen their skills to lead (or facilitate) conversations, meetings and workshops. The principles and techniques provided are closely aligned with Agile and Sociocracy 3.0 and enrich them.

This training programme consists of 4 half-day modules. In each module, we first provide the general framework. Next, we put the principles and techniques into practice and the participants work out examples and cases that tie in with their own work situation.

**Programme**

**Day 1: Competencies for facilitators**

1. How to stimulate participation and involvement
- techniques to engage all participants
- working with what emerges
- working with resistance
- your role as a facilitator
1. How to facilitate a safe and stimulating environment
- focus on process
- group rapport
- observing verbal and non-verbal signals
- active listening
- stimulating feedback loops
- ensuring inclusivity
- ensuring sharing
- fair witness
- framing conflicts and resistance
- promoting creativity
- consulting effectively
- decision making

**Day 2: Learning to use various adapted working methods**

1. Applications:
- We collect and discuss the working methods that participants already use: e.g. presentation, discussion rounds, serious games, activities, brain gym, role plays, ...
- We learn to choose suitable working methods depending on learning processes and desired outcomes:
- different variants of the working methods and their pros and cons.
- when is a certain working method a suitable methodology?
- how do we ensure variation and diversity?
- how do we ensure everyone participates in every working method?
- We learn to facilitate specific working methods.
- We learn to harvest:
- How do we ensure valuable learning experiences?
- How do we ensure support and joint decision making?
- We practise working methods in combination with the built up facilitation skills.
- We learn how to use the available time efficiently.
1. Practice and reflection
- In this module, participants get to work themselves with the taught principles and techniques. In small working groups, they have to:
- Prepare a 'typical' meeting context and choose adapted working method(s);
- Open the conversation space and invite the participants;
- Facilitate a process;
- Close and conclude the conversation space;
- Participants give each other constructive feedback. In this way, we use the principle of *meta-cognition* (learning about one's own learning) to take people to a higher level. Because of this, people directly experience what the impact of learning process facilitation can be and they can immediately get to work with applicable principles and techniques.
